In addition to dogs and cats, the staff at Madison Veterinary Hospital cares for an ever-increasing number of birds, small mammals and reptiles. In fact, the exotic species are the fastest growing segment of pet ownership in the nation. We treat large and small birds, rabbits, ferrets, mice, gerbils, hamsters, guinea pigs, skunks, chinchillas, hedgehogs, turtles, snakes, lizards and other species.
People often obtain these delightful pets with limited knowledge of the special care they require. When the appropriate nutrition and proper environments are not provided, serious illnesses may result. Pets suffering from these diseases are frequent reasons for presentation of exotic species to our hospital.

Since many of these exotic species are notorious for "masking" their illnesses, early diagnosis and treatment are crucial. Aside from having the requisite knowledge, MVH utilizes specialized drugs and equipment for the best possible care. Some of the services that we provide include complete physical examinations, dietary & husbandry counseling, blood & urine analysis, DNA sexing, x-rays, ultrasound, nebulization, pulse oximetry & EKG monitoring, isoflurane anesthesia, dental procedures, soft tissue & orthopedic surgery, hospitalization and boarding. MVH is equipped with separate species-specific hospital and boarding facilities that include climate controlled wards.
We have provided you with a questionnaire concerning your exotic pet's health. Please select the appropriate information sheet, print it out, and answer the questions that correspond to your pet's medical history.

Several doctors at MVH have developed wide experience in the diagnosis and treatment of a variety of exotic pets. Through continuing education and consultation with board certified exotic species specialists, we keep all our treatment protocols up to date. To further enhance our knowledge, we maintain active memberships in the Association of Avian Veterinarians, American Ferret Association, House Rabbit Society and Association of Reptilian and Amphibian Veterinarians.
