Complete Medical and Surgical Care for Dogs, Cats and Exotic Pets

Wellness Examinations and Vaccinations – The gradual onset of health problems in an apparently healthy pet often goes unnoticed. Once symptoms appear, the condition may be more difficult or costly to diagnose and treat. Although age itself is not a disease, it can bring many conditions that if diagnosed early can be completely reversed or controlled for extended periods of time.
At least once and perhaps twice a year, your pet needs a complete physical examination. Remember, your pet's lifespan is shorter than a person's. A lot can happen in 12 months.
Due to the many recent discoveries and innovations in veterinary medicine, your pet can be protected from most major diseases. Today, many immunizations and preventive treatments are available that did not exist just a few years ago. The staff at MVH can help you decide what preventive measures are necessary for your pet(s).
Heartworm testing, parasite checks and routine blood screens are all useful adjuncts to keeping your pet healthy.
Another part of 'wellness' is the Microchip Pet Identification System (Home Again) – a microchip is a tiny electronic device, about the size and shape of a grain of rice. It is implanted beneath a pet's skin between the shoulder blades, and stays there for the pet's entire life. This procedure is as easy and as painless as a vaccination.
Each microchip has a unique number. This number, along with information about the owner and pet, are added to a national pet registry. Most veterinarians and animal shelters have electronic scanners for detecting and reading these implanted microchips, so a 'chipped' pet can be found when lost and readily returned to its owners.

Complete Medical Services – Our state-of-the-art hospital and our highly trained staff allow us to perform most medical procedures and provide the necessary care for all your pets. Intravenous fluid therapy, chemotherapy, oxygen therapy, nutritional support, and wound management are all performed routinely. Glaucoma diagnosis and treatment is facilitated by our Tonopen tonometer, a 'high-tech' way to assess intraocular pressure.
We also provide in-depth medical work-ups for complex problems, and are happy to give second opinions.
-
Surgical Procedures – Our hospital is equipped to perform most surgical procedures from routine spays to complicated orthopedic or cancer surgeries in a sterile environment. We take pride in our equipment and our modern anesthesia and patient monitoring systems, as well as active gas scavenging and piped oxygen throughout the hospital.
If we are performing a surgical procedure on your pet, please be sure to review this information.
-
Radiology – We have a state-of-the-art 500mA X-ray machine that produces excellent quality radiographs. Radiographs are essential for diagnosing certain medical and surgical problems, and are performed routinely, with pets either being awake or anesthetized. We also are able to perform various types of contrast studies, and are affiliated with Penn HIP such that hip dysplasia evaluations can be made at our hospital.

Ultrasound/ Telemedicine – This is a non-invasive modern technique that produces a visual image of the interior of the body. Ultrasound is completely free from side effects. In addition, ultrasound allows the doctor to achieve a depth of detail that is not possible with x-rays. Ultrasound is particularly useful in diagnosing abdominal diseases as well as diseases of the heart, and can be combined with the ability to send images over the Internet to obtain the opinion of a long-distance specialist. Click here for more information about Ultrasound examinations and Telemedicine.
Endoscopy – Endoscopy is the ability to look inside the body, using a variety of very small cameras attached to either a flexible or rigid tube. The procedure allows the doctor to actually see within a body cavity or within a given organ. Directly viewing the interior of an organ is often very helpful in determining the cause of a problem and / or helpful in establishing a diagnosis.
The endoscope can also be used more aggressively to take biopsy samples or to perform minimally invasive surgery. This has the advantage of being less traumatic (than standard surgery) to the patient and allows for a faster recovery.
Click here for more information on endoscopic procedures.
-
Reproduction Services – We are a Network Member of
International Canine Genetics Inc. (Synbiotics Inc), and equipped to do hormonal testing for
ovulation timing. We perform other Breeder Services including Semen Evaluation and Artificial
Insemination.
-
Cancer diagnostics, surgery and chemotherapy – We have
performed chemotherapy for many different types of cancer for many years now, often in direct
consultation with an oncologist. Most side effects are minor, and we have been able to help
many families enjoy a longer time with their pets. This can be done while still maintaining a
high quality of life for the pet with cancer.
-
In-House Laboratory and Diagnostic Testing – Laboratory testing plays an integral role in the early detection of changes in your pet's health. Diagnostic tests provide essential information by which our veterinarians can identify blood disorders, kidney and liver disease, diabetes, infection, cancer, thyroid disease and other hormonal problems.
Our extensive laboratory provides fast and accurate information that is necessary for the well being of your pet. Owing to our modern in-house diagnostic equipment, animals can receive appropriate evidence-based treatment immediately after arriving at the hospital.
-
Pharmacy – We carry an extensive inventory of veterinary pharmaceutical items, supplies, and medications, and are now able through our close relationship with Liberty Drugstore in Chatham, to provide many custom compounded pharmaceuticals as well, e.g., flavored liquids or transdermal preparations for pets which are difficult to medicate.
A doctor must approve all medication refills, and in all cases a current examination, at a minimum within the prior twelve months, is necessary. A 'doctor–patient' relationship with our hospital is necessary to comply with New Jersey law. You need only phone or fax your request to us in advance in order for it to be approved and ready by the time you wish to pick it up.
-
Behavioral Counseling/Pharmacological treatments – At MVH we recognize that the best pet is usually a well-behaved one, so we do try to counsel clients on behavior modification, sometimes using outside consultants to aid us in this effort. We prescribe psychogenic medications, e.g., Prozac, in the event that these may be needed to help us control unacceptable behaviors in our client's pets.
-
Exotic Animal Medicine and Surgery –. Click here for information on our exotic animal care programs, all the way from cockatoos and chinchillas to skunks and snakes.

Prescription Diet sales –We stock a very extensive range
of Hill's Prescription diets, as well as IVD, Purina EN, etc. Over many years our doctors
have developed great confidence in these diets as an adjunct to the treatment of a variety of
diseases including those affecting the kidney, heart and liver. Additionally there are diets
for obesity, allergy and cancer which have all been shown conclusively to help the underlying
disease process, and which we therefore utilize constantly. Our doctors will write a
prescription for you pet which you may get 'filled' at Madison Feed, Grooming and Pet Supply
Center situated beneath the hospital.
-
Technician Visits – our exceptional staff are able to provide several services without the need to see a veterinarian:
-
Obesity / Diet Evaluations
-
Repeat Blood Sampling
-
Anal Gland Expression / Nail Trims
-
Pet Loss/Bereavement – everyone in the hospital is particularly sensitive to the emotions that exist when we lose a pet – we're all pet owners ourselves. Occasionally however, outside help is beneficial, and we do refer clients to a Bereavement Counselor who has been very constructive in assisting them to deal with their loss.
